I can write dialogue all day long, but descriptors of scenes – not so much. I wish I could more easily string adjectives and adverbs together, producing such beautiful prose that sweeps you away into a mesmerizing, captivating, spellbinding experience like F. Scott Fitzgerald or Wally Lamb.

One of the things I love, love, love to do is EAT. I love good food. And I particularly love soul food. It’s the food I grew up on. It’s the food that fills my belly and warms my heart. Give me some collard greens, mac and cheese, fried fish (and yes that would be the croaker with the head still attached), turkey wings and gravy, black-eyed peas, fried chicken, grits, some yeast rolls, hushpuppies and anything drenched in butter and you will have one happy girl!

If you’ve read Naked and Unashamed, you’ll know that the titles of each chapter are titles from songs. I love music and Shula, the counselor in Naked and Unashamed loves music, thus the titles of each chapter in Deliver Us from eviL will also be song titles.

My last blog post was a plea to Black men to stand their ground, to kneel before God’s throne and to assume their rightful place in our homes, our hearts, our churches and our communities.

Society portrays us as angry, promiscuous, domineering, and a “superwoman” stronger than her man and less feminine than other women. We shouldered the burdens of so many, leaving us weighted down, tired, feeling used and abused.

I am literally running on fumes! Maybe it’s the “getting old syndrome” but all of a sudden, I’m finding it harder and harder to get it all done. Family, work, travel, writing, ministry and somewhere in there I need to exercise, try to eat well, oh yeah and sleep would be nice.

During this time of remembering and recognizing our heritage and legacy, I am more acutely aware of the struggles our men have and are continuing to face. Our Black men are under attack and Satan knows that if he destroys the man, he will be able to unravel the fabric of our families, shake the foundation of our faith, and destroy our very lives.

Deliver Us from eviL is about women in power, whether that be at work, in the church, or in the home, and the challenges, struggles and triumphs they face.

I’m baaaack and I wish I had some adventurous, titillating reason for my absence, but truth be told, I’m just now recovering from the longest jet-lag ever!
