Naughty By Nature

I am absolutely dumbfounded that in 2017, we are actually viewing photos of Africans being SOLD at a slave auction – bloodied, beaten, and bound. I am dumbfounded that in 2017, we are STILL listening to stories of sexual assault, harassment, and/or abuse of our children and youth as well as of women in the workplace. And two questions are being heralded around the globe – WHY and WHAT? Why are these evil atrocities happening and what can we do about it?

I too pondered these very questions and I must admit, I was momentarily dumbfounded. Paralyzed. Numb. In a complete state of shock. Until the Holy Spirit spoke to me, reminding me of Who He is and who I am in Him. He reassured me of His plan and reminded me that none of this is taking Him by surprise.

  • First, we are all “naughty by nature.” We were born and shaped in iniquity (Psalm 51:5) rendering us all sinful by nature. And because of sin, there has been, is and will be evil in this world.
  • Next, we have an enemy who is hell bent on taking us down (I Peter 5:8). And as his reign on earth draws to an end, he is more vigilant than ever in spreading destruction and devastation (John 10:10) meant to discourage and deceive us.
  • But (I love God’s big ol’ buts!) God, in His infinite wisdom, has provided all of the weapons we need in order to be encouraged, to stand and to act.

So how do we stand still and act in the face of tragedy? Before the great reveal, let me make this disclaimer as I’m sure you’re waiting with baited breath for some profound, revolutionary response.  Perhaps you’re waiting for a link to a petition to sign, the date of a rally or a “donate now” button. I know, because that’s what I was searching for too. However, the answer I received isn’t glamorous or sexy. It actually seems counter-intuitive to our naughty nature that tells us to do, to move, to fix it. But read this:

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, the weapons we fight with have divine power to demolish strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). No weapon of this world that has been formed against us will prosper (Isaiah 54:17) if we tap into the divine power, putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:11) - truth, righteousness (our ability to be in right relationship with God), the gospel of peace, faith, and the word of God Ephesians 6:14-17). Once clothed in God’s armor, protected by His divine power, are we able to stand against the schemes of the enemy (Ephesians 6:13). It IS NOT by our power or our might, but by God’s divine power (Zechariah 4:6).

How do we fight the evil that seems to be consuming us? We get in God’s Word. We accept His gift of righteousness. We promote peace. We stand in faith. The Lord is faithful and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one (2 Thessalonians 3:3). Be encouraged my friend, knowing that greater is He who is in you then he who is in the world (I John 4:4). The battle’s been fought and won (2 Chronicles 20:15). And we will reign victoriously with Christ in but a little while (1 Corinthians 15:57).

From My Heart to Yours,

Davenia
